Teacher Training Program

The world-class Bikram Yoga Teacher Training Program is a nine-week course that prepares you to be an instructor immediately upon graduation. It is a challenging and vigorous program designed for serious practitioners of Bikram Yoga. The course includes several components - twice-a-day yoga practices, lectures, posture/dialogue clinics and various lectures. Each aspect allows you to further understand your own practice, as well as gain a deeper comprehension of each posture and how it impacts the human body. In all, you will spend over 500 hours immersed in the knowledge and tools needed to successfully teach Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class to students who seek the benefits of this amazing yoga practice!

Study and practice Bikram yoga in a concentrated environment with over 300 other devoted, serious practitioners from all over the world. In addition to intense yoga practice, consisting of two 90-minute classes each weekday, the course also provides in-depth instruction of asana (postures), anatomy, therapeutic applications, philosophy/history of Yoga, and memorization of the Bikram Beginner’s Yoga Class Dialogue. The focused practice and study of each of the 26 postures will prepare you to support your future students, while also growing your own understanding of your body and yoga practice.

“Bikram is one-of-a-kind, he brings out parts of you that you didn’t know you had.”

Learn from Bikram himself! This training course is an incredible opportunity to learn first-hand from one of the great living Yoga Masters. To create a comprehensive, varied learning environment, Bikram hand-selects each staff member and invites experienced visiting teachers to share their knowledge and teaching style both from the podium and in the lecture hall. In addition, expert guest speakers visit throughout training to cover special topics.

What should I bring to Teacher Training?

February 2nd, 2009

Bikram Yoga Teacher Training

Everyone is different, so you should plan for your own personal needs and requirements. However, on a basic level, here are things everyone will need to bring:

  • Yoga Mats
  • Yoga Clothes (11 classes/week; laundry service is available)
  • Clothing for lectures/posture clinics. These clothes should be comfortable and allow you to execute postures modestly in a group setting.
  • Water Bottle - Many students found they needed a larger water bottle, initially, then they typically use at home. Also, getting an insulator to keep water cold was also popular.
  • Toiletries
  • Medications
  • Electronics - Many students bring laptops, iPods, cell phones and cameras. Some found bringing a power strip afforded ample outlets for both people in the room.
  • Notebook/Journal - Notebook for class, journal for personal writing.
  • Sun Wear/Gear - Bathing suit, sunscreen, hat, etc.
  • Clothing for weekend outings, if desired
  • Outfit for graduation, if desired

Can I still lift weights once I start Bikram Yoga practice?

January 26th, 2009

Bikram Yoga indeed does promote stretching and elasticity of muscles. It does so much more, though. It also promotes strength and balance,  balanced strength, and balanced flexibility.

If you find in your practice for example, that your abdominals need strengthening or your hips or shoulders need stabilizing, you could do weight training that accomplishes those goals.  The more your hips and shoulders are stabilized by balanced strength around the joints, the more in alignment your postures and your body will be.

It is also possible to only do Bikram Yoga and accomplish these goals, as the practice itself deepens your awareness of your body’s needs.

What’s your experience?
